Young people go to Parliament to have their say during Democracy Week

From 16 – 20 October young people from all over the country had the opportunity to put their ideas on British politics to Labour’s Vice Chair for Youth, Dawn Butler MP and other Labour MPs as part of the “My Life My Say” debates held at Parliament during Democracy Week.

Hot topics of the day included crime, sex education and lowering the voting age to 16. Young people from the YMCA, Youth Parliament, schools, Young Labour and Labour Students came together to discuss the change they want to see for young people in Britain.

Dawn Butler reported that “The My Life My Say debates really dispelled the myth that young people are not interested in politics and are not interested in the issues that will affect their future… It is not enough to just talk about the problems affecting the youth of today, we also have to listen to them.”
