It’s shocking to think that more than a billion people survive on less than a day. But it’s true. It may feel that due to the enormous scale of this poverty, we as individuals can’t do much to change this. But we can all make a difference.
No country has reduced poverty in the last 30 years without also increasing trade. That’s why Labour has worked hard to secure fairer trade rules. And, since 1997 has committed lots of money – almost £12 million to encouraging fair and ethical trading.
This is how you come into the picture.
Fairtrade is a people’s movement for change aimed at tipping the balance of trade in favour of poor producers.
And you can be a part of that. Why not make Fairtrade Fortnight, (Feb 23 – March 8) the start of a new way of shopping to help people who live in poverty? Just three simple steps to the way you shop can make someone's life a whole lot better
First, where possible buy products from developing countries
Second, if there is no clear labelling then ask the retailer where the product has come from and ask they provide this information more clearly in the future
Third, ask about the working conditions of those who produced the goods
Make it happen. Choose Fairtrade.
