What "youth facilities" would you set up?
Labour has annouced a plan to use unclaimed money (currently sitting in bank accounts across the country) an initiative that would give young people a greater say over local authority spending on youth projects. The new fund is will help develop leadership skills and general life experiences.

"Youth projects" brings to mind youth centres and monthly discos, set up by well meaning community leaders. But do they work?

What this new youth strategy brings to the table is the chance for young people to help make the decision of what the money is spent on in their neighbourhood.

So rather than build another, cold, laminate floor youth centre, why not build a coffee house with internet access? Or hold lessons on anything from dance to computer science? The options are wide open...what would you spend the money on?

youth facilities are crucial to the future of this country - they affect everything and everyone. For instance, decent youth facilities with good role models stop young people getting into trouble they should be avoiding, they help kids learn and do better in school and they ensure that there are positive things for people to do in sometimes run-down inner city areas.

It's a shame in London we've lost Ken - who was committed to youth facilities for all Londoners - and 'gained' Boris Johnson - who's probably committed to youth facilities for kids who alreayd own tennis courts. For the many not the few!

I recently visited a youth club in Camberwell, and although some people would say it was old-fashioned with its pool tables and a boxing ring, the environment there was welcoming and communal. There were internet points for people to use, and an indoor football hall, but most kids were just chatting about what was going on and learning from the excellent staff there. No one was messing around and I was really impressed by the whole thing - we need more of these to generate a culture of respect!

I think free swimming is a good start - but are community pools are so boring compared to the ones in France. Let's get clubs and competions going - not with swimming as the main bit but socialising - games etc

One real problem with the young people that we want to get off the streets are the sort of young people that don't like to follow rules which is exactly the sort of problem that would be caused if we set up more youth centres, there bound to have rules. I do think that more martial art/boxing centres etc would be more succesful and I think that facilities such as Salford Lads and Girls club is a great example to build upon.

I would set up a sports activity centre for the younger generation. Somewhere to go for a game of snooker, table tennis, bowling. Yet something that doesnt empty your pockets at the same time.

A dance club! I love dancing – street dance is my favourite. Having a dance club would be a great way of meeting friends and keeping fit. I hate exercising, going to the gym, running, all that stuff – dancing is great fun and helps me keep healthy too.

I really want to be a presenter so a community radio station that me and my friends could be a part of would be great! I would love to have my own radio show - I'd only play indie/rock music and would try to interview as many celebs as possible - that would be really cool.
